Putting it in Perspective Print
Monday, 28 February 2005
This past week, I had dinner with friends who recounted their experience of dropping their daughter off at college. They quipped that things had changed so much since they were in school. It also reminded me I failed to post this years Mindset list from Beloit College.

For the past 7 years, Beloit College has created a list of facts about the upcoming freshman class. These facts put into perspective technology, pop culture and current events from their view. It also references current events when they were born. One of the items from last years list was "Ctrl + Alt + Del" is as basic as "ABC." Taking its place is #29 "Computers have always suffered from viruses."

I find the list fascinating for many reasons. For starters, there aren't too many lists that can make me laugh and cry. Moreover, I appreciate it when someone else can present another view in a non-threatening way. When I look at today's young adults, I keep this list in mind and it helps me to understand their perspective. It also reminds me both groups have a lot to learn from each other.

I suggest giving the list a look. I suspect there will be some items that will catch you by surprise. I also hope people don't resign themselves to some of these items. While it may be true computers have had viruses for the last 18 years, it doesn't mean they always will. After all, we have a new generation of people capable of working on these problems.
