Quick Fixes for IE 7 Sluggishness Print
Sunday, 24 December 2006

If you’ve noticed that IE 7 can be a little sluggish at times, you’re not alone. One reason is the new browser’s phishing filter. The problem is partly caused by your browsing habits and part is dependent on a web site's use of frames. The good news is Microsoft has posted a free fix for this problem.

One of the new features of IE 7 is the phishing filter. It helps prevent you from going to dangerous sites by evaluating the page you’re requesting. If that page uses frames, that evaluation takes longer since the program has to read multiple HTML files. The problem is compounded if you view many framed pages in a short time. Sorry, I don’t know how many is “too many” nor what constitutes a “short time”.

There are two solutions to this problem. One is to disable the phishing feature. The second is to download a the update file.

Solution 1: Download Microsoft Update

If you don’t have a mechanism for evaluation phishing sites, I would recommend installing Microsoft’s update file which resolves this problem. However, since this is not a “security” issue, you’ll have to go and get the file which is about 2.3mb in size. Details about the file can be found on the Knowledge Base page below.

Microsoft KB928089

Solution 2: Disable IE Phishing Filter

To disable the phishing feature,

1. Start IE 7

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Disable Phishing Filter in the Settings list.

4. Click Apply

5. Click OK

6. Restart IE 7
