This week focuses on upgrades. On the home front, I’ve been busy making changes to better performance. The site should look the same with the exception on one icon and a new custom search refinement. If you see any odd site behavior, please drop me an email. My test and production sites have different configurations and don’t always act the same. But I wasn’t the only one doing updates as a couple of software publishers had major releases and Microsoft added a freebie.
The good folks at Grisoft updated their very popular free anti-virus software called AVG. If you don’t have an AV package, you should consider this one. The product works on Windows 2000, WinXP and Windows Vista. More info at http://free.grisoft.com/ Microsoft also released an interesting product called Search Commands. It’s designed for Office 2007 and allows you to find commands by typing an entry in a search box. This makes it easier for people who transitioned from earlier Microsoft Office versions. It works with Excel 2007, Word 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. Although the product page doesn’t mention this, the add-in is pre-release software. The EULA clearly states this and other fun facts. Speaking of fun, if you go to the middle of the product page, you’ll see a thumbnail for the product video. This one is a tad different from most of their product movies. Long time readers know one of my favorite “useful utilities” is CCleaner. I wrote about how it can delete files and cookies almost 2 years ago. Piriform released a major update last week which has new features and support for Firefox 3 early adopters. The installer still wants to install Yahoo!’s toolbar so if you don’t want that option, remember to deselect it during installation. If you’re looking for other great alternative software, Gina Trapani did a great article for Lifehacker. Rick Broida at BNET spotted a good article from The Art of Manliness on voicemail tips. The article has 10 tips for leaving a good voicemail and impression. Don’t assume you know all these tips. The article reminds me I should probably change my voice greeting to suggest some of these rules to callers. Walt Mossberg of the Wall St. Journal has an informative article on “How to Avoid Cons”. The article has 7 rules and a short video. The article covers everything from “social engineering” to tools like Site Advisor. You might also want to read our earlier Site Advisor product review. That’s all for this week’s web round up. If you want to know when our next article comes out, you can sign up for email updates or the RSS feed. |
