This week’s web roundup of outside articles seems to have a time theme. That wasn’t intentional, but it became apparent when I put the list together. Blame it on Daylight Savings, which occurs this weekend for many readers. Before you reset your clocks, this would also be a good time to test your smoke detectors and read our Privacy Policy. Don’t worry, there’s no correlation between fires and our privacy policy. I needed to tweak it because of Google’s AdSense program.
This weekend might be a good time to try a virtual break. Mark Bittman had a nice article in the New York Times called “I Need a Virtual Break. No, Really”. If you can’t imagine giving up your technology and gadgetry for a day, just start with one item. Besides, you probably have a head start this weekend since you’re giving up an hour anyway. If the above approach seems radical to you, then you might prefer the article on Zen Habits titled The Zen of Tech: 12 Powerful Ways to Keep Your Online Life Simple and Peaceful. Don’t be thrown off by the opening references to a Mac as the suggestions are universal. My favorite way was item #7. In an attempt to organize even more of your information, Google has developed an application that syncs your main Google Calendar with Microsoft Outlook. You can set the program for 2-way sync, Google Calendar to Outlook or Outlook to Google Calendar. You can also specify how often the programs should sync. This is a program many people have been waiting for, but remember it’s still in beta. If you’re interested, my suggestion would be to first verify each calendar is free from duplicate items and has the correct times after Daylight Savings. Let me know your experiences as I’ve not tried this one. There’s no shortage on the web of “the best” or “the most popular” lists. One list I did enjoy was from Ed Bott titled,” My 10 Favorite Windows Programs Ever”. The list is based on his own use of Windows programs for the past twenty years. Some of these apps, we’ve mentioned in either our articles or Sites we Like section such as ClipMate, RoboForm and TechSmith. Other programs were new to us or I thought they just worked for Vista. The other item I picked up from Ed Bott’s site was a reference to how his site had problems displaying in IE8. Even though this newest browser from Microsoft is in beta, I did want to see how this site renders. I suspect I’m like many webmasters in that regard. The good news is the browser has a toolbar button called Emulate IE7 so you can revert to previous functionality. The bad news is my CMS template doesn’t look correct in IE8. I noticed the article headlines wrap to 2 lines and the email and email icon moved to the left. If you happen to spot other oddities with this browser, please send me an email. |
