New Search Feature and Disclaimer Print
Wednesday, 20 April 2005
You probably noticed we made several design changes recently. The biggest one was swapping out the previous search box and replacing it with the Google search box. As with most things, there are advantages, disadvantages, and a disclaimer.

Most readers know that I'm a big user of Google for searching. I find the interface simple and the relevancy good. It made sense then to add that search functionality to this site, as it was more robust. It also saves readers from going to Google if they want to search the whole web. The downside is that Google doesn't have all the site pages.

With the new search, you can also use the same search syntax as if you were on www.google.com. For example, to get a list of articles about Microsoft Outlook, but not Outlook Express you can type,

microsoft outlook -"outlook -express"

As for the disclaimer, we may receive revenue from this service in the same way we receive revenue from Google Ads. These contextual ads appear based on the contents of our articles or your search query. As example, on stories concerning spam, you would expect to see ads from companies with anti-spam products. However, it would be possible to see ads concerning the famous luncheon meat. It all depends on how the advertisers structure their campaign.

During the period we've been running Google Ads alongside articles, we've encountered few complaints. Most of the products advertised were relevant to the displayed articles. And there have been a few people who inquired as to whether we endorse the products. The short answer to that question is no as we have no way of knowing which ads display.

As usual, feel free to give us feedback.
