Guide to Controlling Spam Print
Sunday, 17 April 2005
FREE Guide - In early 2003, we sold a report called the Productivity Portfolio Guide to Controlling Spam. It was a 120-page report that included over 20 product reviews. It was based on a lengthy product analysis of over 30 different anti-spam products filled with tips. We're now releasing the report under a Creative Commons license for free minus the reviews which are outdated.

So much has happened since we released that report. At one point, we considered updating the material, but we didn't have the resources. However, people requested we re-release the report without the product reviews. Since much of the content is still relevant, we agreed. We broke the report into separate Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files representing each section to make it easier for viewing or downloading.

While we were reviewing this report, we were struck by what has changed and what remains the same. Spam is still with us, but many of the companies that were mentioned are not. Many companies were acquired and some were forced out. The major ISPs and web based email providers have improved their spam filtering services.

Despite legislative efforts, spam still exists. Although the newer techniques such as Bayesian filtering have helped, we don't think the problem will disappear until the economic incentives are removed for spammers.
