Targeting Contacts with Outlook Express Print

One item I repeatedly hear from Outlook Express users is how the program doesn't have the Contact features of Outlook such as Categories. This is true, but the program is more versatile than people think. (Includes flash tutorial)

Outlook Express makes it easy to send email to search results. For example, using the Find feature, you can send emails to search results such as:

- People from the domain "acmewidget.com"

- People with the first name of "Robert"

- Email addresses containing the word "support"

- People with area code "415"

This feature works well on the "Other" tab within the address book. Since the "Other" tab is a free form text area, you can add all sorts of notes about your contacts. I have one friend that has an informal list of codes he uses in this area such as "trade show prospect", "press", etc. When he wants to send out a product announcement, he queries this area for the words "trade show prospect".

To send an email to search query results,

1. Click the Create Mail toolbar button.

2. Click the To: button

3. Click the Find button at the top of the Select Recipients dialog.

4. In the Find People dialog, enter in your search query

5. Click the Find Now button to the right.

6. Select your names from the results area at the bottom of the dialog

7. Click the To-> button.

8. Click the OK button on the bottom of the Select Recipients dialog

Your new message should now be prefilled with your search results.

If you simply want to query your address book without sending an email, you can click the Find People button on Address Book toolbar.
