After our Firefox review, we received an email from a reader saying he loved the program as he no longer has to futz with IE's missing status bar. If you're still using IE and don't get a status bar when you open another window, we have a solution. (Includes flash tutorial)
Many people have emailed me to vent their frustration of the missing status bar when opening a new window in Internet Explorer. This issue is perplexing to many as sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This is also a case where people didn't realize how reliant they were on the status bar until it was gone. Another reason this item is annoying is you think an Internet Explorer setting can resolve the issue. You make the change to show the bar and things seem fine, only to disappear at some inopportune moment. But, the solution also calls for changing a setting in Windows Explorer. Otherwise, the fix is temporary. This is an example of how the operating system and browser are intertwined. To make the View Status bar always show in a new IE browser window,1. Start Internet Explorer. 2. From the View menu, select Status Bar. A check should now appear next to this option. 3. From the View menu, select Toolbars and then Lock Toolbars. Again, a check mark should now appear next to your selection. 4. Close Internet Explorer by pressing your Ctrl key and clicking the Close box in the top right corner. 5. Right-click your Start button in the lower left of your desktop. 6. Select Explorer. A Start Menu dialog will appear. 7. From the View menu, select Status Bar. The status bar will appear at the bottom and you should see an item count and size for the folder you're viewing. 8. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options A Folder Options dialog will appear. 9. Click the View tab at the top. 10. Click the Apply to All Folders button. 11. Click Yes if prompted to set all the folder options to match the current folder. 12. Click OK and close Windows Explorer. To verify the fix works, open a web page with many links in Internet Explorer such as Google or Yahoo! Your status bar should show. Next, find an interesting link, right-click, and select Open in New Window. You should also see the status bar in this second window. If not, verify your Status Bar and Lock Toolbar settings are still enabled in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
